What should I check when a usage limit interrupts a task?
Codex Usage Limit Reached: What Next?
First identify what the message is limiting. Then check the account, the displayed deadline, and whether the issue still occurs before changing your setup. A structured note is more useful than repeatedly retrying a task with no new information.
Work through this order
- Confirm the account and workspace. Compare the identity used for the task with the identity in the usage view. Keep any mismatch in your notes before switching.
- Capture the exact message. Separate a usage notice from an authentication error, an unavailable model, or a failed tool. Similar interruption symptoms do not establish a shared cause.
- Identify the named limit. Read its label and associated deadline. Use How to check Codex usage if you need the account or CLI route.
- Check the date and time zone. Compare complete timestamps. A local calendar date or an old screenshot can make a deadline appear to have passed when the relevant account time has not.
- Make one useful follow-up check. After the displayed deadline or a relevant account change, reopen the official usage view. If appropriate, try a small task once and record the outcome.
These steps are Reset Radar's troubleshooting sequence. They help distinguish observations; they do not diagnose an account from a percentage alone.
Choose the next action from the evidence
| Current observation | Useful next action |
|---|---|
| The relevant deadline is still ahead | Save it in the personal timer and return at that time |
| The account offers a reset or another option | Read its conditions before deciding to use it |
| The deadline has passed but access still fails | Record the fresh account reading and the new message |
| The message concerns a different feature or permission | Investigate that exact issue instead of editing the timer |
| You cannot identify the affected allowance | Keep it marked unknown and collect the missing detail |
OpenAI tells users to check the options shown in their account; these may include waiting, an available reset, credits, or a plan change. Support can investigate incorrect usage or missing access after a stated deadline, but does not grant courtesy usage resets. See the official Codex account guidance.
Switching models is not evidence that an exhausted allowance has been restored. For future task planning, consult OpenAI's current usage guidance and our usage interpretation guide.
Prepare a concise problem record
Copy this worksheet and fill in only what you actually observed:

OpenAI's support guide directs users to the chat widget on its Help Center and recommends a clear description, reproduction steps, timestamps, and environment details. Remove private project content and sensitive data from any supporting screenshot. Do not send passwords, sign-in codes, cookies, or repository secrets to Reset Radar.
Avoid unhelpful retries
Do not assume a timer reaching zero proves an outage. Do not replace the account's deadline with another person's time, or keep refreshing without recording whether anything changed. Preserve your task's current work so that the next attempt has a clear starting point.
If timing is the remaining uncertainty, return to When does Codex reset?. A reminder tells you when to check; the official account tells you what access is currently available.
